What kind of exhaust set up sounds good on 4.4 ?

I have an 01 4.4, what are the options? Maybe an x pipe? I dont want too much interior drone, is that unavoidable?

It seems to me that an x-pipe is a popular choice that gives a little more volume and slightly different tone without being over powering or annoying. In my experience the best thing to do is try to find people local and listen to their setups. Although that does prove difficult depending on the car, but still worth a shot. Check out this link it has some good videos of different setups. http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...deo-clips.html Youtube is also a good source to check out a bunch of different setups, and sometimes you get an interior sound level video as well to at least give some idea.

I was thinking x pipe as well, i heard it offers a slight growl upon startup and slightly more sound from outside. But all i hear is that loud fan from out side.. i want to hear one with a tubi set up in person.

THis is a 4.4.... E39 :-) Flowmaster crossflow. One with resonator, one with resonator removed.

Hope this link works....

I found a youtube video showing the install of an x-pipe followed by sound clips. BMW X5 4.4i X-pipe Installation Video and Soundclips. - YouTube

One clip is stock resonator + a single flowmaster crossflow muffler (no room on the E39 non-M5s for a second muffler so the second pipe wrapped around the spare tire to come out the other side for the quad exhaust look. Second clip I just had the resonator removed.

Also, because it's not true quad exhaust, the resonator (IIRC) acts as a Y pipe so it's probably more like an X pipe would be on an X5 I would think.
