New guy with an X5, have a few questions about the frond end!
Howdy y'all. I bought my '02 X5 4.4I with 112K miles on it about a year ago and it's up to 131K now. A week after it was purchased the radiator started leaking but the dealership replaced it free of charge, as well as free lifetime oil changes and brakes. Going through the paperwork, outside of routine maintenance the only issue since new was a shock replacement and something else, minor. A week ago the stereo quit playing sound and I found the amp was submerged in water which fried it. The new one should be here tomorrow. I assume it's a drain tube issue? After drying it all out there hasn't been any sign of water since.
It's in almost perfect condition and everything electrical (besides the stereo and the heater squeaking in the morning) works as it should. There's only 3 burned out pixels in the stereo display, not bad for a BMW. I do have a few questions though: 1) Since I've had it there's been a clicking noise coming from the driver's front when straightening the wheel back out after making a turn. I assume it's the CV axle but before I buy one and replace it I'd like to see if there are any other opinions on this. 2) Probably related to above. If I'm cruising down the road and tap the brake pedal suddenly there's an audible thunk and the steering wheel jerks slightly to the left. If I ease on to the brakes like normal there is no sound whatsoever and no jerking. The pads and rotors are new (replaced by the dealer before I bought it) but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a sticking caliper or something dumb. 3) Probably related to above as well. Every once in a while, not often, when making a right turn at a certain swoop and speed, after straightening back out there's a fast-paced vibration that goes away after a few seconds. It really shakes the whole rig. Seems like a CV axle thing I've experienced on "normal" vehicles. Not sure on one of these though. 4) When it's cold, there's an annoying groan from the front end when going over speed bumps. It goes away when everything is warmed up. Sounds like rubber bushings or spring seats need some grease. This is the first BMW I've ever owned but I have working on a few of them. I love the **** out of it and it's quite an awesome rig. I am aware they tend to have a lot of issues but this seems like a solid one. Does great in the snow and isn't all that bad on gas 18-19MPG average. Comfortable, handles well, hauls ass, etc. Deer also fit nicely in the back, so I'm sure it'll stick around for a while. Not sure about an Elk though. I have a crazy work schedule and haven't had a lot of time to really look in to this thing so I've been kind of ignoring the issues. I do all of my own work on vehicles and have very few, if any, mechanical limitations. I'll keep searching around on here, lots of info! |
