One quick question. If the truck says engine failsafe, can the dealer hook it up and tell what's causing the mode. Seems like that would be the logical thing. If the truck is in failsafe mode then it should at least be able to say why.

short answer, yes. long answer? you would Not be the first to have their x at a dealer for a while as they try to diagnose, though if it is real hinky and you have not done anything mod-wise that they can blame it on, the dealer is in the best position to chat with BMW NA and see if they can help with the fix. DON'T hold your breath, but they can come through sometimes..

Of course, I'm frustrated and fear what a trip to the dealer will cost me. It's also over 150 miles one way to where it needs to go. At this point, I think I might just have it towed back home to sit. I just hate having to make payments, pay insurance, and plates on a truck I can't drive.

I know that there's not much chance that anyone can help solve the problem, but it's good to vent sometimes.
Your indi is highly suspect if their answer is to tow it to a dealer. At the least theyre honest. The indi i go to receives work from the stealer go figure

To the op, it sounds like the shop is looking for a way out, cause they can't figure out the problem.
In their defense it doesn't sound like an easy one. He replace the part there are codes for, checked the wiring, about all that is left is the dme. Not a guess I would want to be on the hook for if it turned out wrong.
Might be easier to have your Indy try a new dme. And be willing to accept it if that doesn't fix it. Then maybe head to the dealer, it just seems like a PITA for you to get it to the dealer...

To a few who replied: read the tread. He posted the codes found. They are even in bmw's format, not generic obd P codes. Auto zone and a dealer scan are not going to reveal something new. An AutoZone scan would be even less informative than the info he posted.
That said hopefully the dealer techs have the experience and troubleshooting skills to nail down the problem.

you could ask BMW mechanics on:

Ask a BMW mechanic

it will cost a few dollars for their time and expertise.

I have dealt with this mech for years now and this is the first thing that he hasn't figured out.

His next step was going to be a new DME but niether of us wanted to take the risk if that wasn't it

I just unlugged the MAF and drove around a few miles. Nothing changed and I didn't get a CEL. Shouldn't I have had the CEL come on?

Since I've had the truck home, it is acting better. Even when I mash the pedal to the floor, it just takes its sweet time getting to speed. And the button in the pedal when you push it down all the way does not downshift like it did before. He did try 3 different pedals and none of them changed anything.

I was thinking the same thing as SlickGT1... unplug the MAS

and see what happens, which you just did.

That could be your problem- MAS is bad.

I know in my other car if the MAS is bad it goes into fail safe mode also and it limits the RPMs to 2400.

Sound about right?
