For the Aussie guys, new tyres

Hi All,

I need a new set of tyres for the X5. I need 2 x 275/40/20 for the fronts and 315/35/20 for the rear. I currently have Bridgestone Dueler RFTs on it but was thinking about going to non-RFT's.

I have had a look on eBay and for some Dueler non-RFTs they are about $1400 + shipping.

Just wondered what options I have in terms of brands and also what sort of cost I am looking at for the set of 4.

I am located in Victoria so somewhere in Vic would be the best bet for me.

I'm also in Victoria and for expensive tyres I use tirerack.com. For example, tyres for my HSV are about AU$860/each local, about US$250/each from tirerack.com.

I also intend to use tirerack.com for new treads on my 4.8is when the time comes (same dimensions as yours). You can use the application guide on tirerack.com to see what fits.

Freight for 4x20" tyres last time I imported was US$250.

Locally, I've used St George Tyres in Sydney who have some good deals. In Melbourne, give Advance Tyres in Richmond a call.

This ^^

I needed to put a pair of Pirellis on mine about a month or so ago... out of convenience sake I asked the tyre power shop 3 doors down from our office for a price (He "supposedly" looks after me cos my mate is their appointed MTA trainer) I was quoted $595.00 per tyre.

I sent a text to my old mate at Tempe with what I needed, $400 per tyre.

Big fucking difference.... totally worth ducking out of the office for a couple of hours for.

Thanks for replies. I actually contacted Tire rack last week. I was only going to replace the 2 rears. The run flat 315's are $304US but he quoted me $260US shipping for only 2 tyres. I did the maths and it really wasn't worth going with them over my local guy (he is about $200 more).

I'll do a bit of a ring around and see what I get quoted.

Called up Advance Tyres in Richmond and got the following prices

Dueler RFTs (on special)
$425 fronts
$450 rears

Dueler Non-RFTs
$400 front
$415 rear

Atturo
$200 front
$279 rear

Has anyone tried the Atturo's? Bloke from Advance said they werent as good in the wet as the Bridgestones and were noisy. The price difference though is pretty substantial.

bigwave2255 seems to have strong opinions on this topic

Experience suggests you get what you pay for, though the practical difference on a 2000Kg car with all wheel drive is probably marginal for most circumstances.

sorry if i sounded a bit strong in the post on atturo tyres, it just annoys me when people will bag out a product with out first trying it.

as for me ive now been using the atturo tyres for 12 months and in that time ive done well over 30,000 km.

my opinion of the tyres hasn't changed, however i will add that while the dry weather performance is good, the wet weather performance when driving like a complete goose is questionable, and by that i mean, if i want to go around a round a bout fast in the wet i do get 4 wheel drift, controllable and equal back and front ( which maybe due to the cars capabilities) but to achieve this i have to be travelling faster that the conditions could dictate.

they are also in my opinion a little noisy, however no more so than the michelins that were on it, and only on our horrible concrete roads here in Queensland (M1)

they wear exceptionally well and after 30,000+ km mine still look to be only half gone

no problems with balancing and they wear even front to back (20 inch)

will i buy them again.....probably yes

Got some prices from Tempe. The bloke there has averaged out the prices for all 4.

Atturos $200 each
Bridgestones $400
Michelins $550

Those prices are delivered to Victoria, so I would then have the cost of fitment. Not bad prices.

His comment was "Atturo are good value I would say"

Smile

$400 a tyre is good IMO

I would just be going the Bridgestone RFT's if it were me, I'm a gambling man but not when it comes to something I put my family in.

I'm sorry but I just don't see the logic in cheap tyres (unless your doing burnouts on them).
