Oil filled over max line

Hi Folks,

I just got back from BMW dealership, noticed service tech. who worked on my X5 filled my oil past the max line, my question is, is this going to cause problem for me if I continue driving the vehicle as is? I know its a probably a dumb question but I need to know the risks. I don't want to cause more problems to the vehicle because of the tech's mistake.

Thanks,
Soner

How did you go about checking your oil? Did you check when the car was sitting for a while, or did you check after the car has been run?

Car has been sitting overnight in my garage, and I've checked it this morning...thanks for your help. Because of one service tech's carelessness I don't want to have more issues with the vehicle..

Best remove the excess. You can use a syringe with a long transparent rubber pipe and suck it out,or you can "VERY CAREFULLY" undo the drain plug sufficiently to let some oil out.Always best to have a clean bowl under the car ,as you do this, incase you cant hold the drain plug in place and all the oil drains out.I have done this a few times and been lucky but hate doing it!

Thanks for the suggestion...Just got a call from the Service manager, and he is coming by to pick up my car(i guess he lives near my house) because this will be the third time ...total carelessness, I'm so done dealing with them and spending money on gas and time. Super frustrating.
Is it my luck i wonder or if there are other shops with similar issues....

Happens at dealers as well,as sometimes its an internal problem!I now work more on electronics side of Bmws but not uncommon for a mechanic to overfill and in some cases the car has a safety feature and doesnt even start,so they "push it" towards us ,thinking its an electronic issue!I have taken 2.5 litres oil excess from a car before ,due to mechanics carelessness!!!
Most of the Bmws here are turbocharged and overfilling can kill the engine as the oil will not drain from turbo to sump and engine will run on its own oil!
Good luck with yours

I don't think you should be cold checking your oil. At least I have not seen this anywhere. I will look at my Bentley to confirm, but you should have the car running for a little bit, go for a short drive or something. After shutting it off, you need to wait about 2 min, then check the level. I have a feeling you have the right amount of oil in there.

I can't see a mech at the dealer, looking at his computer, which tells him 8oz with filter, over fill your car. Go for a quick drive then check the oil, and let us know.

Over filling can be very bad, typically a short drive let the car sit and take measurements. Since you did this and it's over I would without a doubt drain some of the oil to get the car set at the correct oil level.
