What's that noise? (Video)

Hey there-

just wanted to show this video in case I can get some feedback on this problem my car is having over the last 2-3 months; basically there's a hard vibration from under the left side of the engine bay (from looking under the hood) which is getting worse on cold-starting, particularly after 9 hours sitting outside my work. Some days it starts like a bag of spanners...

The vibration is strong at the same time as a pressure cycle - I'm not sure if it's the power steering pump or, the shop suggested, the intake manifold, but this was without getting it on the ramp yet. When the car is cold the vibrations cycle at 30 seconds 'on' and 7-8 seconds 'off', when warm it's more like 20s on, 15s off.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? At the same time there's been a very hard first shift from 1st to second, with late change and a jerk forward, then all the other gears are fine.

Here's the vid...

I was going to say the same thing. Turn off the A/C and see if it keeps doing it

Heyyyy -genius! If you turn off the AC there is still a low-grade 'chuntering' but that completely gets rid of the cycling... we can just go through some causes of the rough idle at the shop; I was dreading it to be something in the transmission!

The AC was never all that strong since I got it; changing the gas really helped but perhaps the compressor/ system was faulty the whole time. I also need to address the cracked expansion tank today so I am taking money with me

OK - still I have the vibrations through the wheel / floor of the car on cold starting (will recap later) - just wanted to say you guys were right about the AirCon cycling - I noticed it had one pulley being driven by a belt, another that stops and starts periodically as stated... if you pull full right-lock you can see this from under the wheel arch;

http://www.e-bigs.net/BMW/accomp.jpg

(part number 64526917864) - the pulley with the arrow is the one cycling on + off

Anyway, back to my original idea that the problems with the vibration on cold start is from crap in the transmission for a few reasons;

- with the first crank it feels like the engine is pulling a bag of sand round with it
- the first shift when being driven from cold start is late (revs high) and jerky
- it vibrates more when put into reverse versus a little in D, least in P / N

and somehow the symptoms are directly proportional to the oil temperature. I went to the garage first for an ATF flush but I don't think they did it correctly... does this sound like it will correct with an ATF washout, or am I at risk of shredding the Trannie?

Do a quick search on transmissions and get ready to read, read, read and then read some more and if you're like me after all the reading you will still have no idea which way to go or what to do.

Yes - so many things to consider - from alternator bearings to the AirCon compressor to dirty trannie fluid - the next stage will be to check the belts as I noticed the power steering going heavy when the engine is warm, AND I got a squeek after I replaced the coolant expansion tank the other night - might have spilled a little on the belt... maybe they're all a bit loose and that just tipped it over the friction threshold
