No, because the only way to find out is to do it, and nobody has tried. However, we do know that the various modules communicate with each other, that they expect certain modules to exist on the bus with them, and that the combination you are proposing was never built by BMW, so it is reasonable to expect that some custom programming may be required if it is even possible. You should also expect error messages and faults.

These aren't '57 Chevs that you can simply bolt in any power you like. It is more akin to putting a different Intel processor in a computer that was never offered with that processor, and not knowing what would happen until you fully debugged it.

Guess i will just start looking for a good 4.6is engine. Maybe I could make enough off selling my 4.4 and my bad 4.6 to pay for it. Anyone know of any 4.6is engines out there?

A guy in the E39 world did the opposite. Changed his 4.4 for a 4.6. In his E39. The bottom end bolts right to the top.

Guy was from TX. I'll have to try to find his thread.

Found the link.

Thanks! He seems like he knows what he's doing. I just sent him a PM. Hopefully he can offer some advise for my case.

Sounds like he swapped a short block, not the complete engine.

Timing chain popped off because the tensioners went bad. (I bought it this way). Im assuming there is some valve damage so just looking for the quickest/cheapest way to get it going again.

why would you have to change anything other than the motor (hardware)

surly the only problem will be the increased cubic capacity going from 4.6 to 4.4 so couldnt you just get a re map???
