+1 for a starter replacement. Sounds like it is disengaging from the ring gear before finishing it's crank cycle therefore the starter is still driving as the pinion solenoid is de-powered and is pulled back. You're probably grinding the ring gear too so I'd get it replaced ASAP and start the car as little as possible until you do.

Thanks for the confirmations everyone. Sounds like I gotta call back the mechanic tomorrow and schedule the earliest availability to get the part in and replace.
