Odd sound at engine start

Recently, my 03' X5 4.4i (85k miles) started to have a strange sound on startup. It does not happen all the time. It seems to happen more when I start the car after it's been parked for some time. The sound is a bit hard to explain, but as the engine is starting, there is horrible sound that happens along with the usual engine startup. It's only there for quick second and goes away as soon as the engine is started/idling. The best description I can make of the sound is that it sounds like metallic/sandpaper rubbing or scratching noise.

Anyone know what this might be? I'm guessing that the starter may be the culprit, that it may be going bad soon? Want to bring it to my mechanic, but it doesn't happen 100% of the time on startup.

Trying to record the sound the next time it happens so I can post it.

Check your A/C and alternator drive belts.

Thanks. Aside, from the usual cracks/etc. to look for, is there anything specific I should look out for on the A/C and alternator drive belts?

Your idler pully maybe needs replacing.

Okay, was able to try to capture the sound on my iPhone here (at the 2-3sec mark): BMW X5 E53 engine start noise - YouTube

Was afraid of that, it's not as obvious sounding in the video capture, but very obvious sound that's not normal in real life. I'll probably just have to take it to the indy mechanic and hope it happens when I'm there =)

Secondary Air Pump problems? Will only happen on a cold start.

Okay, got better sound recordings:

Normal sound at startup: BMW engine start normal - YouTube

Odd noise at startup: BMW engine start noise - YouTube

Took it to an BMW indy mechanic (lucky the noise was there when I started it up for him). He says it's the starter.

$250 for a new Bosch starter part + $200 for labor
