Unhappy pdc sensor wire melted. Can't get working...

I had one PDC sensor on rear bumper not working (left). We finally had some nice weather so I went out to investigate. After removing the harness around that sensor I was able to see a couple of the wires were melted. Straightforward enough. So I spliced in some new wire and reattached the sensor, but it is still not working.

I tested that sensor with some of the other sensor locations and it would work fine - likewise working sensors did not work when plugged into this repaired port. So clearly there is something still wrong with this port.

My next step is to remove the entire lower bumper and inspect the entire harness, but before I do that I wanted to ask if there was anything I needed to do to "reactivate" the sensor, post fault. I already reset the fuse and had turned the PDC on and off with the dash button (many times) but that didn't do anything. The other sensors activate immediately when I replug them in, so I am still thinking it must be a local issue.

Is there something I am doing wrong with this splice? I have cut back the wire until it is not black/burned and then scraped it some to improve contact. Still no joy.

Any ideas?
