One method is to tap on the side of hub where the ball joint taper is attached and goes through the hub. This gives an impact to a jammed joint taper and ball joint drops off by itself.

yea thats a old tie rod trick I have used but it wasnt working on the bj in my case lol.

On my '03 I worked from the top with a large drift and knocked the BJs out of the hub carrier (apply plenty of WD-40). It does require a fair amount of elbow grease and an expanded vocabulary.... On my '06 I needed to do the wheel bearings and once the CV joints are out of the hubs pounding the BJs out is straight forward.
