Different size tires on same axle?
My wife recently (45 days ago or so) brought her car to a local brake shop for a brake inspection. I just noticed yesterday that the shop switched the front and rear tires on the passenger side so she has been driving with mismatched sizes on each axle. It's a 2001 4.4xi with 285/255 staggered set up.
Is it possible that this mismatching could have caused damage to any steering or suspension components? I do have more inner wear on one of the 285 tires, but I am not sure if it was like that previously or the switch caused the wear. Thoughts? |

i don't think that in 45 days you could cause any damage as for the tire wear that would not happen in that little of time.. you should be fine.

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone else?
I forgot to include in OP that the car has 285/45/19 in back and 255/50/19 up front. The diameter difference between these two sizes is .21% according to the tire size calculator I looked. up. |

It isn't a good idea to run different size tires, but it has the same physical effect as always turning in a circle, or running one tire a little low on pressure. That is, the differential is constantly turning. Not great, but not likely to be catastrophic.

The OE staggered sizes (255/50/19 and 285/45/19), for all practical purpose have the same diameter...so it should NOT cause any issue, IMHO.
