Easy but odd question...anyone ever?
Just a question guys. If you have great! Don't bust me up too much. U Haul charges miles. Shipping it is astronomical! And no I don't have the hitch (I wish) someone stole it! |

I can't see why you can't do it. Just make sure you strap it up really tight. 400 miles is no joke. The wind resistance will be epic. I also can't see why you can't call a truck company to transport it. The travel cost in two directions might pay for the transport. Just a thought.

Agree on the multi-point tie down...fwiw, I have hauled some 4x8' sheets of plywood home, but lower profile, and it was only ~ 8 miles.
Must be a helluva mattress/box spring set to want to cart it that far... We will need some pics, as in 'weird stuff carried on car roofs, that blow off' style. ... ![]() GL, mD

Someone stole your hitch or the receiver? If they snatched the hitch and ball just pick a new one up. The factory hitch kit on the X5 has a 2" receiver. Any generic 2" ball and slide will fit the factory hitch or pick up a new genuine BMW one HERE.
I've as for a king mattress strapped to the roof of an X5, I've heard of stranger things, just make sure you use several tie down points across the front of the matters to prevent it from lifting at highway speed.

yea factor in the tolls, time wasted (as in what is your time worth), traffic, chance of some funny, and I mean funny shit happening, plus food, plus drinks, plus smokes, plus protecting the mattress from the "yech". I don't know if I would mess with going 800mi to pick up a mattress.

As I noted, it must be one helluva mattress set, or maybe there are some very fond memories from it...

not sure i would want to sleep on a mattress that has traveled 800 miles on a roof. that mattress might pick up a few things along the way.
