				Clock setting - Instrument Cluster

After pixel repair on cluster my date and time have been reset. How to set the time in the cluster? I replaced the original NAV with an after market one a few months ago. Will I have to connect the original NAV to set the time? I have tried the following: - key in the ignition position 1, press the button on turn signal stick to display clock. - press the right pin on the cluster - this brings up "Check Controls" on the display. Time dashes do not blink. My car is 2002 4.4i - original NAV replaced with an after market one. |

I concur with Term. The way the system is wired, they all talk to each other. Since you had the factory NAV, the iBUS unit went through the nav to control to OBC. Now that you deleted it, the unit can't talk to anything. Only way to do it is to bypass it by using what Term said, or maybe GT1 and going into the computer to change it out. If you don't mind me asking, why did you go aftermarket and not factory? I am assuming you had dead pixels or something and that's why you swapped it. I couldn't believe you taking a working unit out and replacing it with a Pioneer or Kenwood head unit.

Slick, I did not want to be too harsh on the kid from down under - i hope he kept the original equipment and did not cut the wires and the reversing of the damage is still possible... I was looking at some of the units taht mimic the original Nav screen and must admit, the BMW things are waaaay behind the times... But the mere fact that they are totally integrated with the rest of the car, makes them the only proper things to stay in the car. If I walk into a dealer lot and see a pimped beemer with aftermarket sound system, that car is pretty much worthless in my opinion. Unless you are using items that were SPECIFICALLY designed for a BMW model in question by someone who KNOWS his shit, that chinese DVD screen is totally useless.. I did use aftermarket DVDs in the headrests ( I recently got original headrests with built-in monitors, but they really suck). But the headrests monitors are not tied anywhere into the system, even though, the replacement headrests were NOT proper fit for the holes in the seats, so, there is a bit of vibration noise from those aftermarket headrests... Just proves once more, things must be made specifically for BMW in order to fit like a glove...

Bingo! I've seen some pretty aweful stuff people put on their E53's. One time I saw twin trash can mufflers on one with Titanium burnt tips??? Another I saw M badges all over and DINAN on the side skirts. The worse one I saw is when someone thought it was a good idea to put a wing on the back and spinners with a gold lip! DAMN thing looked like a roller skate! I just went up to the 20 something gangta wannabe and said, "Ummm, looks like shit, bud!" Pointed to mind and said, "Now thats how it is supposed to look." He starts poppin' off and the last words I shouted out were, "If you want a ricer, then go buy a 4 banger!" and then got in my X and left. The only good looking aftermarket thing I have seen on an X is one I saw driving down to Ocean City, MD. 4.8is Le Mans Blue with custom fabricated exhaust. I talked to the owner and he had the Porsche 911 Twin exhaust tips installed. There back end had some fabrication, but damn did it look good!

We do agree that the Nav, that was designed in the early to mid 90-s is not upto to par to contemporary standards, when an iPad can outperform the system... however, just because the pyramids are old, it doesn't mean they are bad design - grossly outdated, yea, but not that bad... BMW, Audi, MB were at the tip of the techno spear when they introduced things into the cars, and then Kia, Hyundai and the rest are copying something that has already been tested - a 1929 Rolls Royce has a huge engine (almost an 8 L) and the horsepower was only just a bit more than 100 hp... Even a small car today beats those numbers... But sticking an aftermarket Nav into a bimmer is same as opening a Wal-Mart store inside the pyramid... This is my opinion and I am sure there will be people who want to preserve the integrity of the original, and the ones who have no patience for the age...

I don't know how the nav is shit. One it works. I have taken the car on multiple trips without a hiccup. It didn't get lost, it got me around detours, and all that. I have a factory AUX port, so I can play music from my iphone. Really, what else do you need. It also plays MP3s from the CD changer, although I don't use the CD changer at all. I have it loaded with a bunch of CDs just in case. I rarely turn on music at all. Most of the time just because my baby wants to hear some music. Clearly OBC is not useless. You now can't set clock. You now can't run any of the OBC diagnostics tests, or can you? You can never reset your gas mileage. This is stuff that I use all the time. Plus when you go to sell the car, I promise you that there will be a ton of people that will look at an aftermarket unit, as a piece of shit. Your price when selling the car will drop a cool grand because of this. That is if people even want to look at a car that has been "butchered". When I was buying mine, there was a Lemans blue one, that someone did the same thing to the nav. I didn't even bother looking at it. It sold, I think, on ebay, for $3k less than I paid for my car. Think about this.
