Fuel capacity tanks ?

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the fuel capacity tanks for the X5 3.0i and 4.4i are the same size? (up to year 2006)
The tank is in the rear right wheel arch behind the cover (looking from the rear).
I need this tank, I have a 2003 3.0i and the one that I have been offered is from a 2002 4.4i.

Thanks in advance for any replies guys
Best regards to all
Jaima.

Do you mean the expansion tank RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.4i EXP.TANK/ACTIVATED CARBON CONTAINER

A search of the part number says it is the same on all E53 petrol
Two part numbers are shown and the second one covers all E53 including diesel .
ETK Prototype

I don`t think you have any worries .

Hi Amacman,
Thanks very much for putting my mind at ease, I didn't know whether to
accept the tank or not? I will get back to the guy who is selling the tank,
hopefully he still has it, for some reason these tanks seem to sell like
hotcakes and it is quite hard to find used ones in the UK!

Thanks again mate
All the best
Jim.

Amacman

Amacman,
Would you happen to know if it is fuel that goes into these tanks or is it gases/fumes
that goes into them? (some kind of vacuum to release the build up of fumes)
Tried google but keep coming up with "tanks fuel capacity" and not
"Fuel Capacity Tank"

Cheers mate
Jim.

What are you talking about? I don't even know what you are talking about.

A google search works much better when using a real term or name of something...

Try "charcoal canister" maybe if amacman has the part correct. Or carbon canister

I would like to know what is wrong with your fuel tank and expansion tank because this is the first I have heard of a problem and as you said they sell like hotcakes so there must be a common problem .
Here is a link to TIS again for yourself any anyone reading this
BMW TIS Online • 5' E53 • X5 4.4i (M62) Offroad • Fuel supply system • fuel tank with mounting

And I Googled fuel tank expansion tank and found this which explains how fuel expands when warm . The expansion tank and especially the carbon filter are to control fuel vapour , preventing or reducing vapour being vented to the atmosphere which prevents all that expensive fuel disappearing into the air through evaporation although the real reason manufacturers fit these systems is because legislation demands it to control pollution emissions .

Can`t edit that post for some reason
I am guessing your tank has suffered the same fate as the 7 series tanks which implode because the vent which permits air in to replace any fuel used has become blocked creating huge vacuum .
Spiders in cocoons over winter are the usual culprits so find the pipe which draws air in and check it is clear of spiders . Maybe fit some gauze over the inlet to keep the blighters out .
