Subwoofer Upgrade....

I done the search and read MANY posts (not all) so I hope i'm not here. I've read about the JLs and BSWs and custom boxes and builds. But I was wondering, what if you just changed the actual sub speakers in the OE enclosure and ran a different amp to drive them? I'd imagine the sound would be somewhat better. I have the DSP system in mine and don't want to go through too much hastle (or cost) to upgrade my system. From what I've read, all I'd need is some module to bypass the stock amp and to run my amp to the speakers. I already have a nice 5-ch Kenwood amp looking for a place to roost. It's more than capable of pushing all of the speakers, including any upgraded pair of 6 1/4" (I'm assuming) speakers. I also already have some nice Kenwood component speakers I can use if I want to replace the door speakers as well. Has anyone tried doing just that?

I was going to save the amp and speakers for my 850Csi when I got it but that could be a couple years from now.

Blade69.
don't try to put a stereo in the 8. They are tooooo sound proof. Believe my. My '91 is amazing and I have to turn the gains up high on the infinity amp and in my Premier HU to get sound out. BUT then again my car has a solid back seat and FULL magnaflow exhaust so stereo is kinda mute anyhow once the music from the engine plays.

BUT IF you do want to put a sub in your X5, I'd at least recommend you buy an amp that you can tuck away in the left side trunk compartment and just run the speaker wires either to a box in the trunk OR to the sub you'd place in the factory speaker enclosure (which will most likely NOT be built to spec for any other subs but what is in there currently).
I have a sub box in my trunk and it takes up room yes, but is easily removable if need be.
Do you use your full trunk space often?

Thanks Fitz. I'm trying to go the "sub"-$400 route. I'll probably just build one myself. There are some great measurements on this site by another member. So I need to stop being lazy.

Clockwork: I don't use my trunk space often. But I've always believed in it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Has anyone tried to just replace the 2 small subs in the stock position?
