They are NOT related. SES is emission related.
You need to have the code read and see what it is. There might be more than 1 code. Oil service indicator tells you it's time to have the oil and filter changed. Do not rely heavily on it unless you don't like your SAV much. It was set for long (~15k miles) oil change interval which is not good for the engine. I did it at 7.5 miles and reset the light every other change.

From the owners manual:
(as TMV mentioned, this warning light indicates that you need to find an OBD II reader/scanner and get the 5 digit DTC (diagnostic trouble code)...once you have that, then you know which direction or which sensor set the fault code...there are too many to guess what could be the issue when the light comes on. Many places (in the USA) will read the codes for free...not sure about Canada.) ![]() (The chart below breaks down the DTC code...as you can see there are multiple "emissions" areas...& the code reveals if it's a generic or manufacture specific code...plus what sensor set the code) ![]() The SI (service interval) display is explained below: ![]() ![]() The information below explains how SIA III (service interval system iteration your e53 X5 uses) works: ![]()

Try concentrating on results from BMW forum sites, or sites that are specific to explaining OBD II codes (like this one: OBD-II Trouble Code: P0174 System Too Lean (Bank 2) )...where you get suggestions for symptoms & possible solution.

P0174
What does this mean? Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 2 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 2 is generally the side of the engine that doesn't have cylinder #1. On your I6 M54 engine, it's the one with cyl#4,5,6 (closer to the firewall) Note: This DTC is very similar to P0171, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time. Symptoms You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration. Possible causes of OBD code P0174 A code P0174 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry. There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor. Or you have a crack in the plastic intake tube, which get air not measure by the MAF. Possible Solutions In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with MAF cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure. Check the intake accordion tube to make sure there's no crack/leak.

After clearing the codes, observe in a week or two if SES light will turn back on.
I have experienced two erroneous cases ( when my SES is on) , "glitch" - emmision related ( secondary MAF ) - voltage related ( I have included my alternator on my "close" watch list) Only one case that I need to take action , open circuit oil temp sensor.. Case to case basis ... Hopefully yours is a glitch too

try running Amsoil p.i. run your tank till empty (doesnt have to be completely empty) and then fill up. Also power foam the throttle body (remove the intake and spray the Amsoil powerfoam into the throttle body while its running, turn off for about 10 minutes, then do some full throttle runs and watch the smoke). Ive had alot of customers who have had their catalytic converter, o2 sensor and other emission related problems cured with these products.

Check your DISA valve....had the p0171 on mine lean on bank one. Found my DISA broken...ordered the repair kit from German auto solutions and also cleaned the MAF sensor....code re appeared combine with p0174. So I remember reading fr e46 fanatics about a dirty fuel filter can cause those codes. With 105,700 mile and original fuel filter I changed mine and fixed those codes. The fuel that came out from the original filter was a nasty black color.
Keep in mind also cracked CCV hoses can throw those codes. |
