Trans Failsafe Prog + GT1 screenshots - HELP

Need help from you guys diagnosing this error. Came up on Sunday during hard acceleration in Sport mode. The transmission got into limp mode, stuck in what I believe was 4th gear. Drove with it for about 50 miles. Stopped, turned it off, then back on and the problem disappeared.

Later on, close to my home, I tested the acceleration in S mode again and the failsafe light re-appeared. This time however the tranny was shifting normally through all the gears.

So got home and connected the GT1 and here are the screenshots.

It's an X5 2006 4.4. Almost 53,000Kms. There are not any issues with the tranny (hard shifting, slipping, noises, leaks, etc)

Stored faults:

Cluster:

EGS:

EGS Details:

DSC Details 1:

DSC Details 2:

I blacked out the speed at which the error occurred because I don't want this thread to become hijacked by another topic.

I have been reading here a lot about this Trans Failsafe Prog and many times it's been a Battery/Alternator/VoltageRegulator problem.

I need to test the alternator voltage during hard acceleration to see if the voltage is kept steady. Yesterday I did the BC unlock trick and (idling) saw the battery/alternator voltage showed 14.1V but sometimes it came down to 13.7V. I did not see anything over that, like the 16V showed in the EGS fault.

So I need some input from you guys as to what would be the next thing to test. I really don't believe that there are issues with the transmission/transfer, but I'm not a bimmer expert either.

Thanks in advance for your help

Why did you eliminate the overcharge

It's right there. 16.something is too high. It happened don't ignore it or you will get unpleasant surprises. What richkid said but don't leave off voltage regulator.

Good luck.

I had the exact same issue before with the same codes but it was intermittent when you turn the car off and on again problem disappeared car drive great once more and when i keep checking the voltage it was within specs all the time. The first indy was guessing ABS/DSC MODULE OR TRANSFER CASE OR TRANSMISSION.So i did what any sensible person would do get a second opinion, the second indy got the same codes but it was the battery over voltage code which narrowed in down to alternator with bad voltage regulator. The power spikes was too much for the car computers which send them into failsafe modes protecting it.

Installed new alternator/voltage regulator. Did a quick test with GT1 and got this fault:

"2E95 DME: Alternator"

WTF?? Any clues??

I would hate to go through the hassle of removing this alternator. It just sucks

But thinking a little bit, since I had high voltage readings before I guess the winding of the old alternator was good. I also purchased another voltage regulator, so I'm going to re-install the old alternator with it, hoping this nightmare will be over.

I'll keep this thread updated.

Thanks richkid

UPDATE #2
The 2E95 DME: Alternator communication loss was because the field connector on the alternator was disconnected. Maybe it came off while installing it, as the alternator has to be moved a lot so it fits in the shroud.

So, as of now, there are no faults in the vehicle. I will need to do a long drive to see if something else comes up.

I'll keep this thread updated
