Most if not all 18s are 8.5" wide and 285 will fit ok. I have 265 winters on my 18s and is almost not noticible.

Whilst I realise the X-drive system is an 'active' AWD system and allows differences in rolling diameters, I do not know what is its tolerance of discrepancy in rolling diameters is?

I have the OE staggered 19's on mine however they get away with it due to the tires having a different sidewall profile.

You would probably want to first find out what the rolling diameter of you proposed tire is versus the current.

also see what you can find in the way of rolling diameter tolerances

I own Unique Customs Wheels & Tires (www.unique-customs.com) and also have a E53. You can run staggered 18" with stock wheels but its not recommended at all. You should run at least a 9" wheel with 285/50R18's to avoid problems with possible leakage of air, and your stock wheels with this wide tire will give the tire side wall a roll effect in turns and sharp curves which could cause the bead to break free. Its not a definite thing that will happen but be aware of the chances of it happening causing you more trouble than its worth.

I am thinking to use Michelin Tour 275/55x18 which seem to be OK for an 8 1/2" wheel ????

Dude,

Get a new set of rims . . . 19's that are on the 4.4 or 20's on the 4.6/4.8.

With that 275/55R 18 on rear, it is nominally, + 1/2 inch taller sidewall, + 1/2 inch more radius, an inch more in diameter, and nearly 3 inches in circumference...

Not sure how much of a 'beefier look' those rears will add, and I suspect only the obsessive 'tire spotter' will notice much diff, as they are not true staggered wheels/tires, eg 132s, 87s, et al.

After all the posts of good opins, you still wonder how they will fit. I wonder why you are still persuing this tire 'mod'? I rec'd calling Tire Rack, telling them you exact wheel 'style', and asking them if those tires will fit.
GL, mD

Here are a couple pics of 132s, the rears are staggered in size, both wheel and tire; I doubt you will achieve a real 'staggered look' with those rear tires in place of the stock size, but everyone has their own bag:

I found this site selling replica BMW rims. Not sure they are any different from the OEM but they are less expensive . . . maybe there is a reason why?

If anyone has purchased here or has replica rims, It'll be nice if you can provided your comment/opinion on replica rims.

It seems that the 275/55x18 makes 697 rev's per mile and a 255/55x18 makes 712 rev's....seems so small a difference
I'll probably go with Michelin Latitude Tour 275 ( now if they are available locally that's another question)

Do what you like, but the difference in tire diameters will be taken up by the clutch (wear) in your transfer case. Don't say we didn't warn you in advanced when you'll be doing a transfer case replacement.

Even the same advertised tire size from different manufacturers varied slightly.
