Bad noise underneath x5 2001 4.4

I had a bad lousy noise underneath of the car everytime I am taking off. i do not know if it is a Transmission problem (no message from the Computer) or what? please I need help.

when the car is cruising i do hear the noise again, but only when I stop and taking off.

Does the noise change pitch, frequency, and volume in relation to road speed, engine speed, throttle position, or something else? That will help narrow down whether it is related to engine or driveline.

What makes the noise lounder or quieter?

Sounds to me like the Transfer Case chain is slapping against the casing, causing the noise and at highway speeds, the chain is out of balance and going nuts inside the case.

If you can make it happen by playing with the accelerator, is it worse when shifting from forward to reverse (indicating play in the driveline)?

Is it amidships to forward, or is it in the back half of the vehicle?

Does it clunk once, or continue a grinding sound?

Possible causes of a clunk are transfer case (chain), output yoke to the front driveshaft, either differential (front or rear), or front axle shafts (more likely than rear since they have a CV joint to accomodate steering motion).

Transmission is what everyone assumes, but transmission issues more often evidence themselves as shifting problems (due to hydraulic control and actuation issues) and not as loud noises.

Does this noise change when you are making turns at all?

I'm pretty sure that's the same noise I have on my '01 3.0. I'm planning on taking it apart soon to find out what's wrong but my E28 decided to die when I tried to start it last week. Is there a way to "shutoff" the AWD mode so I can drive it on RWD until I get a spare car?
