Poll: Rebuilt Transmission life/mileage
Questions:
How many miles have you put on the rebuilt transmission? How is it running to date (smooth, continue to be problematic, etc.)? Where did you get the rebuilt transmission from? Or where did you have your transmission rebuilt? (Specific shop names would be helpful) Last edited by blkxer; 05-26-2012 at 02:40 AM. |

The previous owner of my X5 (01 4.4) replaced the transmission at the dealer I work at about 3 years, 25k ago. No slippage, harsh shifting or anything. No leaks or clunking and doesnt roll backwards on hills. We installed a rebuilt trans rebuilt by the manufacturer and included our standard 2 year 24 month warranty. The dealer I work at is Jake Sweeney BMW in Cincinnati, OH.

Doing some research online; has anyone tried getting a rebuilt transmission from ZF of NA directly? Thinking of contacting them to see if they offer anything.

I think BMW NA has a supply of rebuilt trans. I know that the manufacturer (at least ZF and getrag do) rebuild the trans themselves, as they are always stamped and stickered as such.

Rebuilt in my garage over a weekend a couple years ago after having what seems to be relatively common thrust bearing failure symptoms. About $650 in total parts, although probably could have gotten by at around $400 and left the valve body alone with just a cleanup. Generic Mobile 1 trans fluid. It's been sweet for almost 2 years now.

Did mine last summer (in my garage) and cost about 1200 including refill with OE fluid. That was 95k, this morning glnced at the odo and is now 105 :-)
These ATs are not as feeble as it seems. My personal opinion is that the real culprit is the torque converter which pukes a bunch of fragments into the trans when it fails. If that failure is due t non-replacement of the fluid I can't say.
