"why chains?" - some of the mountain roads out here have grades of 5-11 deg - many have 'chain up areas' before steep grades - very little plowing out here, so many roads will pack to ice - chains not a full time thing - just to get you up or down a dangerous slope more safely - It is mostly the stronger sunlight at higher elevations that clear the roads (thinner air & no filtering pollution)

You have to remember that the people back east think they have MOUNTAINS. So if they can get up those hills, they think everyone else should have no problem. :p

What they really don't realize, is if you get stuck out here, help may not be able to get to you.

Excellent observation. I agree. For the record I ordered the SCC Z chains model Z-571. I ordered one set for the rear tires and in case I get into something really deep I ordered a second set for the front wheels. I will let everyone know how they fit once I get them and install them.
