To put it simply, I don't care what kind of truck or tires you have sometimes having chains means the difference between going about your business or being snowed in for days at a time. Trust me the roads I am talking about are impassable sometimes unless you have a relatively high ground clearance vehicle and snow chains. Not too many other ways to put it.

And to answer one of the previous questions regarding whether I have received an answer to my original question. The answer is no.

Thanks for clarification. I did not me to sound argumentative, so I apologize if I did. I was simply trying to uderstand "why chains". We don't see/use chains much here on the east coast. We get plenty of snow, but don't have the elevations you do.

Good luck to you.

Pete,

No apology required. I did not intend for my answer to your question to sound like a agressive rebuttal. If it did I apologize. There were several posts in this thread from different folks that questioned the need for chains at all. My response to your post was intended to clarify my particular situation to everyone who had previously posted.....if that makes any sense at all. Thanks for you input.

You have to remember that the people back east think they have MOUNTAINS. So if they can get up those hills, they think everyone else should have no problem. :p

What they really don't realize, is if you get stuck out here, help may not be able to get to you.

Excellent observation. I agree. For the record I ordered the SCC Z chains model Z-571. I ordered one set for the rear tires and in case I get into something really deep I ordered a second set for the front wheels. I will let everyone know how they fit once I get them and install them.
