Keyless Entry just stopped working

I noticed the other day that my keyess entry just stopped working. Both remotes are not working so I know it's not just a bad remote. Right about the same time, I also noticed that all of my radio stations presets and settings had returned to flat, like the battery had been disconnected or died, but it didnt. I have tried to reprogram the remotes using the "key to position 1 and back 5 times then hold unlock while pushing lock 3 times" blah blah blah, but it wont even respond. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance. FYI 2002 X5 3.0

I have read that the general module can fail and cause these symptoms, and also that wiring harness problems (chafing of the wires in the rear storage compartment area) can cause it.

The way to know is to get the dealer or a good independent with the appropriate tooling to diagnose it.

Are the inside dome lights working when you open the door?

Sorry for the belated reply but I'll throw this out there. My E39 M5 had a similar problem where the the fuel door lock actuator was the problem. It died, unplugged this or pulled the fuse and the keys worked fine. Replaced it, plugged it back in and no issues.

Remote key / fuel door actuator problem write-up

Most issues are mechanical not electrical.

I just realized (and this is weird) that the keyless entry will work properly if the rear hatch is open.....anyone have an idea why that is so?

Check GM3 if you can. I am working on my door issues as well.
