E53 Headlamp confused

I have an 04 X5 4.4l purchased October 2011. We're heading on a long trip so trying to make sure everything works. However, I'm confused about headlamps. How many "halos" am I suppose to be seeing? The passenger side is out and I've ordered a new bulb. Also, The headlamps closest to grill on either side never come on.. is this normal? The only "full" lights are next to the marker lamps. They are both brights and dims. Are these halogen or HID.. It appears my "angel-eye" halos are the daytime running lights.

I have not had any success online finding any sort of diagram and the manual is not helpful.

The inner ones are high beams.
I think angel eyes' malfunction wouldn't affect your trip

the brights and dims are the same light.. I tested this. The inner two never come on.. and still looking for an answer regarding the "halo" lights. How many am I suppose to have? Just the two or are all four suppose to have the lit ring?

Pop the hood and reach your hand in and feel under of headlights assembly. If you feel the ballasts, you have Xenon (HID), otherwise, Halogen It appears my "angel-eye" halos are the daytime running lights.Do they lid whenever the X is running?

On a post-facelift ('04) the inner two units are only lit when you pull the turn signal lever back. The outer two provide high and low beam (at least on mine which has HIDs).
