how to retrive fault codes without a scanner

My CEL just came one and I believe there is a way to retrieve codes without a scanner? If I'm not mistaken there was a way using the key and cycling it on and off in the ignition that will generate the code on the instrument panel?

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks in advance

Never heard about it. Here in the U.S, I brought it to auto part stores to have it read for free (and clear the CEL light too)
