Oh by the way... Dealer suggested fixes.

I just got a call from the dealer stating that my car is ready...

SA:

"Oh, by the way, the mechanic noticed there is a little sticky stuff on your belt idler and it may cause the belt to become noisy in the future. We can replace the idler for $150 while we are replacing the alternator.

Would you like us to perform that service?"

Me:

"No"

A few years ago, I got a call after another service...

SA:

"We notice that your power steering hoses are leaking. Would you like us to replace them?"

Me:

"Which ones are leaking; how much will it cost?"

SA:

"All of them are leaking. It will cost about $800."

Me:

"No."

Since that time, I have never replaced - or even looked at the hoses and have not heard any subsequent reports of those hoses leaking.

This is one of the reasons people don't trust or get their cars serviced at the dealer. But I guess enough people go for it that the keep pushing unneeded services.

Sadly, service advisors live off of comission. My GF's service advisor salery is pitiful. No one could survive on that salery and she works 12-14 hrs every day... it's insane.
That being said, she is one of the most knowlegable, honest people you'll ever meet. She's been in the car business for almost 15 years and was a tech for 4 years. She has to upsell to make a living but at least she is honest about it. All service advisors aren't crooks

Lying and cheating is when someone come in with one known problem and you try to convince them that they have a non-existent unrelated problem.

If conditions mean that sales people cannot do their jobs honestly, then maybe they should move to a more honest industry.

Exactly the point I was trying to make... That why she left a very high paying job as a service and parts director... The GM wanted her to lie, cheat and do unethical things...the pay is shitty at her new job but at least she can make a somewhat honest living...

Again, not all SAs are crooks

OK, I thought you were saying that she "had to upsell" to make a living. I don't understand how you upsell in service and repair without trying to get someone to buy something they don't need?

But that's OK. I am sure your woman is a good and honest person as you say - I agree that not all salespeople are dishonest.

Well. How about the upsell of replacing the cracked serpentine belt while replacing the alternator? Or offering to replace the marginal bet because the belt is going to be off anyways?

This is how she does it. You can upsell and still look out for the customer's best interest.. if you know the vehicles technically... we all know that BMWs have weak cooling systems and shitty bushings in the front end for instance...and that they need preventative maintenance

On the other end of the spectrum, there is the a-hole at a dealership in Ohio that came out with this nasty looking cabin filter and tried to sell my GF a new one... funny thing is that she had just replaced it two weeks prior. When shae called him out on it he stammered and said he must of grabbed the wrong one... umm ok... you need the trump treatment
