Secondary Air Pump, purpouse.?

Hi.

My secondary air pump is failing. When it i start the car in the morning, it winds up and makes a high pitched whining noice.

It seems it still running, but i guess it will fail eventually.

My question is: Living in Norway, other European versions of e 53 do not have the secondary air pump installed at all. I have, since my car is a Us version.

Is the secondary air pump a sort of national demand.?
Is it possible to just unistall the air pump.?

I think the secondary air pump is to help control the emissions. I could be wrong?

To remove it off a US born X5 would probably need to remap the ECU.
Might be better off to just replace the pump?

That could be.

I think maybe the pumps are a bit expensive, not to mention the work replacing it. I was hoping I could avvoid the cost by simply removing it.

It only runs for a short while during startup, and as it is not fitted for european m54 engines, i thought maybe a removal would be okey..

Maybe i`ll try and unplug it for a while, to see if any codes arise..?

Remove and plug the vacuum line that switches the pump on/off and you should be all set to see if it throws codes. I think you'll find a host of them because it is a big part of the emissions system. I saw a post somewhere where a guy had removed the pump, stripped and lubed it and reinstalled it. It seemed to work fine thereafter.
