Go to a good online place that sells the real OEM alternator at discount (e. g. BAVAUTO) or go to a Bosch dealer. It may be more up front but sure saves a lot of headaches later. I know you are not suggesting a BMW dealer replacement, but...

I went to BMW for a replacement alternator. They quoted me ~$1000. I didn't want to pay a ripoff price like that, but I was also in a hurry, so I decided that spending the 1K was better than my time.

When I got to the dealer I mentioned to them that "at least I will be getting a new alternator out of this..." To which I was told, "No, they are not new, they are remans only."

My point is that just because it is BMW doesn't necessarily mean quality. Are their reman procedures any better than anyone else's? I hope so, but you can never be sure.
