my mechanic put a load tester on the battery last week and said that the battery and alternator were fine.

A good load test of a battery will not catch a alternator that has just started to fail. Many techs ASSUME the alt is good because the battery is OK. You can verify alt output with a cigarette lighter style voltage meter, only cost a few dollars. I keep one in the X tool kit along with an OBDII scantool at all times.
