Oil leak help

I have an oil leak coming from the oil filter cap (see pict.) Do I order a new cap or just try to stop the oil somehow? If someone has experienced this and repaired without requiring a new cap please advise.

Thanks in advance.

How in the world did you get a hole there? That oil cap looks butchered.
You will definitely will need a new oil filter cap, do not try to repair it, however, for now find a short screw that will plug the hole, if that's where the oil is coming from. If it's the large O ring under the cap then buy a new oil filter which comes with a new O ring.

mgb the hole you are looking at is really not a hole. The oil only comes out of the bolt on the cap. That yellow sealant (?)was on there from the previous owners service work. I had to break some off to do my first oil change.

He may have over tightened the drain bolt. Better to change the cap and bolt and start fresh.

Yes it looks butchered, but I'm willing to bet it's missing the o-ring, or crush washer that seals that drain bolt. Or it's damaged. Drain the filter, check the seal, replace the seal and you *Should* be good to go. Check the cap for cracks, as well.

Use BMW filter kits only!

Check out the difference in the O ring size...one on the left is BMW...right is STP. Pic on the top is with the STP ring installed and engine running. A buddy of mine is a BMW mechanic and told me I'd get into trouble if I used anything other than a BMW filter kit. The STP O ring kept me dry for a few days...then started making a mess. Cheap solution to what I believe is a common problem. I've had the BMW part in my car for over a month...no trouble at all. Hope this helps...
