Exhaust Fumes & Check Oil Level on 2006 4.4i 86K miles

Hey everybody,

I recently had a new alternator installed in my 2006 X5 4.4i, which has about 86K miles on it. Since then, the check oil level light has been appearing after I turn the car off. It only does this occassionally. I got the oil changed with full synthetic after I saw the check oil level warning the first time and it went away for a few weeks, but now it's back on. Also, lately I've regularly noticed exhaust fumes out the back pipes. The exhaust is white-ish gray color and mainly comes out when idling. Do you guys think these issues are related? Any recommendations? Thanks!
