You're local autoparts store should be able to run a test on the alternator for you, but yes it sounds like it's failing.
If it's on it's way out HERE is a link to the alternator for the 4.8is and HERE is a link to the one for the 3.0. Also HERE is a link to a diy for the 4.4 alternator, it should give you a baseline idea of what you'll be looking at doing when doing the one on either of your Xs.

there is a diode bridge that goes bad on those, but i don't remember details - if you do the bridge search, you might be able to find something useful... is 4.8 - watercooled? i know that 4.6 alternator was watercooled 150A... 4.8 is 170A, right?

Alternator for sure.
I've got mine 3 years ago. Car died at a major crossing, causing 4 ways of traffic jam. Friends came with jump start cable, Jumped for 15 minutes, moved 350 yards, died again, 50 yards away from a repair shot. So 2nd jump, PITA. Get the alternator replaced asap before it drains battery. Quote:
