2002 4.6is

hi, im looking at buying a 2002 x5 4.6is from a dealer here in reno nv. its estroil blue with regular black interior. The steering wheel is from a 4.8is and the pixels in the cluster are dying. other than that it seems very clean and has a clean carfax, it has 104,000 miles on it and needs new tires,, they're asking $14995. what else should I look for and what would be a good price to get that car at? Nice looking truck, Estoril on black is the most desirable and therefor most expensive 4.6is combo.

You'll want to run a Carfax, see if you can find any maintenance history as well. If the car has not had the transmission replaced then be sure you have $5k in a savings account for when it goes south.

Why the 4.8 steering wheel? Since the rest of the truck is stock, was it in an accident and the airbag went off?

Most importantly pay for an inspection at an authorized BMW repair center. There are a lot of potential issues with these trucks... Suspension, cooling system, valve cover gaskets, oil separator, transmission, driveline, the list goes on.

Good luck. If all checks out, make a strong offer and drive it home.

Always have a PPI done before buying used BMWs. You will know what needs to be addressed and in what order, then base your negotiation on that. Have the PPI done at BMW $tealer.

Agree. The steering wheel raises some questions although it could be that the wheel was starting to wear, I know mine is.
Also, verify that it is a factory tow hitch. It appears to be. And the standard cooling system parts, hoses, etc.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and joined as my Dad was looking for an E53 X5, I finally convinced him to get a 4.6is and we almost pulled the trigger on this truck, however found a local 4.6is that was very clean and had a new trans (we're in Chicago).

I doesn't have a clean Carfax, so you may want to check it again, that could be the reason for the new wheel. Also, they had mentioned the radio did not work, so you may want to verify with the dealership, not sure if they fixed it or not.

Otherwise it looks to be a very clean 4.6is, they sent me additional pictures. I spoke to the General Mgr and Used Car Mgr, great people to talk to, answered all of my questions and requests. This dealership is part of the Lithia Auto Group which is known to be a good dealership group.

Check the truck out, you have luxury of being local, make sure the trans shifts smoothly. Good luck and let us know how it turns out, my Dad was absolutely in love with the color, he had to settle for silver :/

I'm not familiar with the 4.6 but is it missing something from the tailgate too (inside)?

In the 4.8 there's a black plastic cover on the lower inside of the tailgate. That 4.6 looks like its missing it.

When dealers don't fix simple things, to me, that's a red flag. Definitely investigate more carefully.

Of course, NEVER buy from internet pics. They always look great and then you go to see it in person and all the flaws show up - door dings, paint flaws, interior wear, etc.

Yeah its missing the slide plate. And no NAV? I find it so unusual that some 4.8 and 4.6's were not LOADED...

Nav used to be a $1.5K option... (or was it $2.5?) I have seen 4.6iS overseas that had no Nav and had 19" wheels as standard... I even had to stop and take second look... it was in Costa Rica - there are no Nav maps for Latin America, so there is no need for navigation... no wonder that the dealer's mechanics were checking my car inside/out when i had it there for an oil change, as it turned out to be one of 5 4.6iS inthe whole country, and mine seemed to have options that they never saw before... lol...
