Thoughts on knocking noise...

Hey all,

I've got an interesting knocking noise from my 4.4...Timing chain guides are good (I've got them out of the truck right now, they look fine).

I know I can hear a bit of VANOS rattle in there, but I think it might be rod knock... this theory might be confirmed by the fact that I can move some of the conrod bearing caps a little bit with a screwdriver. (I have the lower oil pan removed for inspection).

I don't understand why the knock seems to go away at higher RPM though.... I thought rod knock was constant through the RPM range? Maybe I've caught it in time and can get away with replacing the conrod bearings?

Interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on the matter.

-Jeff

Hard to tell from the video, take another video from under the engine by the oil sump. You shouldn't be able to wiggle the conrod bearing caps so that is definitely suspect. However from the video it sounds like a collapsed valve lifter to me... If it it the bearings, you might have got lucky and might be able to get away with conrod bearing if you caught it in time, but you won't know until you pull them off and measure them up.

If you have the valve cover off you should be able to tell by pressing on the valve buckets and they shouldn't budge.

Would love to take another video, but this is the current state of the truck:

Edit:

I'll go check the valve buckets in a little bit.

Valve buckets checked, no squishiness, all solid.... That said, my m73 had collapsed lifters a while back, this is a different noise.

Let us know what it was/is. That sounded fairly loud.
