Upper Windscreen Rubber & Xfer Case Fluid

A) What type of fluid goes in my transfer case? Regular tranny fluid? Ive done the filter and fluid on the transmission, but want to drain the transfer case to give it new blood as well. I know that it being a 2001 I dont have to worry about adaptive values. 2001 4.4

B) The thin strip of rubber on the roof/windscreen line is shot. I actually took the water hose and blew most of it off. Underneath is just metal. Im getting zero wind noise, but Im sure it will rust if I dont paint it etc. Is this replaceable or only coming with a new windscreen? Oddly, the glass is original and perfect with 179,800 miles.

Thanks for the info & help!

I can't really answer your questions exactly, but I CAN tell you I had the same problem with the strip above the windshield. Just so happens I had a cracked windshield as well, so I had the glass guy change the strip. What I can tell you is that this strip is completely redesigned from what was on the car.

You can order the rubber strip for about $20. Here's the link for ECS Tuning:

Cool, thanks! It's actually a tiny bit cheaper at ECS ($20.96) than the dealer. ($21.80 at Tischer BMW)

Yeah, but I think he wants to know if he can replace that strip without taking the glass out. I'd like to know as well. As far as I can tell, it is just held in with clips.

Did we get a definitive answer on whether this can be replaced without taking the windshield out? Mine is cracked all over the place, I'll just throw one in with my next ECS order if so

I've read that if its a BMW windshield that you can just swap it out. There's videos on YouTube of people changing them on different models, it's common for Bmws. I ordered one last week, and will be doing mine as well.

The transfer case uses special BMW transfer case fluid. Part # 83220397244

For a 2001 E53 he just needs Dextron III ATF. The NV125 transfer case doesnt need the same fluid that the x-Drive transfer case does. The NV125 was used until 2003 and after. Apparently 2003-2005 models needs to be visually checked for which case is in it, as there may be some crossover.

The xDrive transfer case uses the BMW Part # 83220397244 fluid which is most likely what our 2005s use.

Thanks Mike! So, Valvoline Maxlife should be OK I think. Ive got 8 quarts sitting in it from my drain and refill ive been doing with the transmission. So far that's gone well, it shifts like butter still.
