![]() My X5 is at 93,000 miles and the wheels have half more than half thread left. Now the problem is... I inspected and noticed many cracks near rim, I mean that's normal. BUT than i see horizontal cracks going down the sidewall! I suspect this is because the tires must have been under-inflated 10 psi by the previous owner? My co-worker told me that they be under warranty... but I don't have documentation to prove they were recently purchased by last owner... So than maybe there's a recall on this model of Michelin wheels? Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus Grand Touring All-Season Any know anything about this? or should I contact Michelin. I'm just worried of driving and having the tire blow on me. and than anything could happen. Thanks for your inputs on this thread... ![]()

Go to a tire shop and have them inspect the wheels/tires.

Which shop would you personally recommend and how should I approach them? I got a feeling most of the shops are stealerships...

You didn't say how long those tires have been on the wheels...
You can check the sidewall for the manufacturing date: it's in an alpha numeric code, but pretty easy to decipher. If the tires were run at low psi, the condition is degraded pretty quickly. Any good tire shop, esp one that carries/promotes Mich tires is worth a shot, though I suspect any 'warranty' will be based on mileage and pro rated, and the 'mileage' may be difficult for you to prove as you are not orig owner and didn't have those tires installed...maybe a tire receipt in glove box? It sounds like they may have some dry rot... take a pic for us. If you want to go to a tire shop just tell them you're looking to have the wheels/tires checked out to make sure they're okay to be driving on. Driving on tires with really low psi will affect the inside of the tires, I don't think there are any signs to look for on the outside, but when the tire is unmounted there will be a lot of rubber "shavings" in the inside of the tire.

Most likeley your tires are not warantied anymore by BMW dealer, it's too old for any CPO or ext-waranty being a 2002. So you can go to Michelin tire shop and check when the previous owner bought and at what mileage, some tire mfg pretty generous on waranty. My Pirelli had a puncture that was too close to the sidewall so Pirelli gave me a new tire, though I had not bought any tire-waranty. But caveat, knowing what I know now about BMW AWD, I would change tires 2 at the time, within the same axle.

Quote:
![]() Under inflated would cause pre-mature wear on the inner of the tire, especially with the negative camber setting on an X5. I don't think it has anything to do with those cracks that you see. You might have dry-rot on your tires as DTMdan said.

Like motordavid said, check to see when the tire was made. It could have been new "old" stock that were put on.
