Should I replace 10-year old spare with a used tire?

My front tires are in real bad shape and I am going to replace all 4 with same exact tires which is Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus 235/65R17 bought in 2009 and 35k miles ago.

Should I throw away the spare tire which appear in good shape based on the fact that is about 10 years old and use one of the current rear tires as spare. My rears are not in great shape but still I think they can handle a few thousand miles and I don't plan to use spare for long time if I ever need to.

What do you guys think?

I would say if it fits the Spare Rim - that would be a sound option IMO

Agreed , but before you chuck it. Why not take it to a tire shop to assess it's condition. That would certainly cost less than swapping it.

Yes. Spare has the same tire on it as other ones. Only much older.

I would probably replace it with the best rear tire you have. I think manufacturers recommend replacing for safety reasons every 10 years.

I would keep your current/orig spare tire in place: while it is a decade old, it's in the dark and if you ever have to use it I would bet it runs fine.

Our X is 11 yrs old, with orig spare, and other than I check the psi once a year, I would have zero qualms in using it if I had to...

When was the last time you had to crank on a spare? Thought so.

Of course I run non-RFTs on the VetteVert with only a plug kit and compressor, but the last time I was left on the side of the road having to change a tire was in...I don't remember, as it was decades ago. Any tire problem I have had has been discovered in the driveway/garage as a slow leak due to a nail and it got patched/plugged.

Most major tire companies recommend replacing the spare every 10 years regardless of remaining tread depth or visual "condition". I have yet to even use my spare, but will still replace it when the time comes. As the old adage goes, better to be safe than sorry.

side but related question

I have four Blizzaks in storage from an old 528 that have not been on the road since winter of '04/'05. Back then, they were utilized for about three winters total ('02/'03 -- '04/'05). Each winter they were on the car from mid Dec. to early Mar. with an average seasonal mileage of about 2,500 miles for a total of around 8k-9k. In my estimation they have about 70% - 75% tread life remaining.

The questions are - 1) what are the concerns of continuing garage storage with option of future use (if I end up adding the sedan back into the mix)? 2) is there safety expiration? 3) anything else to consider? ( I've seen the above input thus far and duly noted, just wondering if anyone else would like to weigh in on the subject)

Thanks.

-Elvis
