Question Speakers

Some of the speakers in my origional sound system distort or are hard to hear. I have balanced them to no avail. Can they be replaced with normal speakers or is there anything special I need to know before attempting this.

brian1950,

I think you're going to find that the speakers in our trucks are 2 ohms...I don't think that's "off the shelf".
Without having to completely redesign your system...I think you're going to find BSW has the best option for "plug and play" speakers for these vehicles. While I've not heard them personally, I've read plenty of posts that have given BSW replacement speakers rave reviews. Evidently, the muddy sounds associated with the stock speakers are significantly cleaned up.

Good luck. Maybe others here can give you ideas on how to use aftermarket equipment with your existing amp and head unit.

X2 on the BSW speakers. I only used a pair to replace the blown midbass in the front of my X5, and it made a huge improvement. It's a bit of a proceedure to swap them as the stock midbass are glued in to their housing. You need to cut them out, and BSW provides new glue. Well worth the work.

Just from looking at the stock speakers, you can tell that some corners were cut. The cages are plastic. The BSW are strong metal. The BSW magnets are also much more substantial. The stock speakers did use a composite cone though very similar looking to the BSW.

A complete set of these BSW speakers to replace all the drivers in the X5 except sub costs less than a single pair or top quality component 6.5" midbass drivers with crossovers and tweeters. They are NOT a true audiophile solution. To do that, you definately need a quality amp with at least 300 watts, (another for the sub), and at least three times the cost of the BSW for speakers. Plus some fabrication work to deal with the wierd speaker mounting. Plus lots of wiring.

But the BSW are a big improvement over stock.

If you go aftermarket you WILL have to make custom mounting rings for the doors.

I simply cut away at the factory housings to fit my after market speakers in. Replacing them with 4ohm speakers won't do any long term damage to the amp, only the speakers if you constantly have them at a high volume level.
