PLEASE HELP~~~Double din conversion

Hello everyone

Im sure there have been a lot of DIY threads about installing an aftermarket double din unit on the E53 but...

for some reason I can not find any that give a straight answer.

My question(s)

I just removed the factory cd player and radio from a 2001 x5 4.4 with DSP and noticed that there is a bracket that is basically blocking the opening ...

How do i remove that single din bracket?
How do I remove the flip panel that covered the cd port?

I have already purchased the double din kit and the stalk steering wheel adapter to go with a Pioneer X940bt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ill try to get some pics up as soon as i could figure it out.

When i removed the factory cd, there was a metal bracket holding the cd player in place... how can that be removed?

I had to cut mine a while back to install a Hualingan unit, now I have new double din Pioneer which I love...check these links. The second link is my car with the whole.

You have to remove the little flip cover - it is easy you will figure it out and cut the rest to make a whole in order to accommodate a double din...

TerminatorX5 is correct. E39 & E53 have similar radio set-up's. There are two versions of the frame system for both platforms: BMW business radio + upper CD or cassette unit OR double DIN version for NAV or similar factory units.

On an E39, the frame unit itself can be removed. There are different part numbers for the two versions.

On an E53, there are also the two different frame systems but they are NOT separable from the dash. BMW has two different part numbers for the dash, for one or the other frame built in. YES there also different color E53 dashes, but I am making this simple.

Bottom line: The little flap on the CD / cassette unit just pops out, then you CUT the frame. YES, you must cut - I am doing this with my Dremel and a pair of vice grips.
