2004 X5 3.0D Self level been on diagnostic help?

I have been having trouble with the air suspension on my car its has the 4 air bag system. Recently the fault appeared on the dashboard with "SELF LEVEL INACTIVE" So i purchased some INPA software a while ago for my old e46. But decided to plug in my x5 an the following faults appeared on the suspension menu of inpa system:

116 Reservoir Pressure Remains constant, When filling of reservoir is requested.
58 CAN Bus

These are the 2 fault codes an explaination with them. Anyone know what could be wrong with the suspension?
I cleared the fault codes and while on the drive i used the hand controller to lower the suspension it went down. Then bring it back up to level and it Rose. So i dont really know what is wrong?
If i leave the car a few days the car does lower. Has anyone had this fault before? Someone on another forum told me to open the boot/trunk while the vehicle has been parked to see if the compressor would kick in an it did it returned the ride height to normal. I am suspecting a faulty relay or sensor?
But any help would be great as im not a suspension or X5 expert.

I have read through about 50 or 60 pages of peoples faults, Thats without the stuff i have read on google.The problem is alot of people get told things and just dont respond once they have fixed the fault.

Code says no pressure change noted after requesting action; that's a big clue. Second one is the car lowers over time (qualifier: I am assuming you mean you are using the car since that plays a part in compressor activating).

With INPA you can not only monitor all of the system, but you can manually control EVERYTHING. Sit in or outside next to the car and play. Raise and lower each corner, monitor the pressure in the air tank, kick the compressor on and off whimsically, tune the stereo and play with the seats while you're out there.

The point is, you have way more at your fingertips than third parties out here can guess at for you. The only thing kinda quirky about the self-level system are the parameters for waking up occasionally and deciding if the car is losing any cool points sitting off-level while parked. As far as general operation, it's just about like you would imagine. Sensors at each wheel tells the module where they are, and the system looks to keep it level (traveling brings on other criteria - don't bother doing all this while someone is driving). If tank gets low, it kicks on the compressor, etc. like I said, just monkey around with manually telling the car what you want it to do, and if you get a "hell no" back from some action, then investigate.

Self Level Suspension Inactive message is hard to troubleshoot. There can be several reasons (and in combination) that could give you this symptom.

Definitely read up and see which symptoms are similar to yours. I would say at least read this thread as it sounds similar to your issue:

In your case, it may be you have a combination of:

1) Leak(s) in your airbag(s).
2) Bad Air Supply Unit (compressor).

So, read up on leaking airbags too.

The CAN Bus fault probably will go away once you resolve the other fault. When I had a fault in one of my yaw sensors, I had the SLS Inactive message and a CAN Bus fault too. Communication just gets interrupted until the MAIN problem is resolved. Once I replaced my yaw sensor the CAN Bus and SLS Inactive went away.

Hi all,

My 4.8is is getting the same thing - EHC "Reservoir pressure remains constant".
In addition, I also get - LCM "57/21 - Level control system"
and AHL -> Shadow-memory:
39/6C - Telegram Speed invalid
3A/27 - Telegram yaw rate invalid
3B/27 - Telegram steering angle invalid
3D/27 - Telegram Terminal status, timeout or invalid
I can clear the EHC code and the "Self Level Susp Inact" message goes away.
I can also clear the AHC code.
However, I cannot clear the LCM code and if I try to, the EHC code returns.

I am suspecting it's a sensor issue. But which one? The front ones probably? Since I also get AHL (Adaptive Headlights) codes? Then again, which of the front ones?

Would appreciate some guidance.

It is 100% the compressor needing to be rebuilt - "pressure remains constant when accumulator filling requested" is the code I had -

I didn't know about the seal rebuild kits when I did mine but I found a very gently used compressor - installed it and cleared the errors in the module and has been running 100% ever since.

Either replace your compressor or rebuild it with a new seal kit (bagpipingandy's kit on Ebay)

I'm just making sure the thread has an answer for future searches considering people were mentioning sensors in this thread a few years back when it most certainly isnt a level sensor
