wheres the sound coming from?
front of motor ? side of motor ? oil cap removed while running sound louder ? timing chain guides? bad cam? Iam betting timing chain guides!Need more info milage, motor ,and dont drive it, take the oil filter out and check for metal if its the timing chain guides there will be metal in the filter dont worry though its soft metal from the cover. it will wear through the cover fast and then Youll need a motor !!!!

If it does turn out to be your guides I feel your pain...it took me a couple of days to figure out that it was going to cost me a good amount of money any direction I went...if I sold the X in it's state it was worth very little, If I hired an Indy to do the work it was going to cost an arm and a leg and if I tackled the job myself I didn't know if I could do it and I would have to research and buy the parts.
Indy quote - $3600 - $4000 (their labor and reasonable parts list) Me doing it - $3300+ (extensive parts list including new Vanos and my inexperienced labor and minimal tool box) If you haven't found it already, read through the write up at this link - DIY: Timing Chain Guide & Timing Chain Replacement It will give you a good idea of what's involved with the job and the tools/parts you will need. And, don't forget there are some very knowlegeable people on this site that have a lot of experience that will help you out - they did for me

When I bought my X,it had no oil pressure and was making this kind of noise, but louder.Later I decided to get an engine swap.I bought my X cheap,I knew it had engine problem.
So,my anticipation, based on my experience,if you keep running it like that, you may get into the same situation.Don't run it until it gets worse,if you get into oil starvation situation(if that noise is timing chain related) you may get more damage.

I bought mine quite cheap and have done a good few things to it. Its costing me £4500. Im in 2minds whether to fix it or send it through the auction the way it sits or sell to a breaker. It is of a very good spec with m sport electric black leather etc etc and full gas lpg conversion so may be worth while breaking?? Dont know what to do. Engine replacement is also an option as i can pick one up for £995.
I test drove a few dog x5s before i bought mine and i thought i was getting a good one! Maybe these cars are just a disaster! For such a prestige car at aroun £50k new, its a joke how many problems there are and how prone to failure they are! P.s can anyone think of any other reasons for the noise posted? Thanks |
