ROUGH IDLE & CODES:

I have a 2001/x5 3.0 auto. It has 173K miles. The O2 are all original. Last month changed out the CCV with a new insulated kit ,used the old throttle body gasket. Ran fine but started to run a little rough and the SES light came on. Coded it and this is what came UP. They all prefix with a P.
1085 Fuel Control Mix Lean (bank2 Sensor 1)
1348 Misfire /start cylinder 4
1347 misfire cylinder 3 with fuel cut-off
0300 Random Multi Cylinder Misfire detected
0171 System to lean Bank 1
1343 Misfire cylinder 1 with fuel cutoff
1741 Couldn't find this one on the code page.
1083 Mixture lean ( Bank 1 Sensor 1)
My mechanic friend then stated "vacuum leak" so we put a new throttle body gasket in, checked hoses and connections and all was great. SES was turned off. Drove away and it was like new again, an hour so later, SES on but still driving smoothly. Two days later, filled it with full tank of same gas. Low octane because I have been getting about 14 mpgs notice this a couple of weeks ago after the CCV change out. Then today, it started idling really rough, engine vibration, and misfire , loss of power. Shut it off, set 20 minutes , turned it on and it seemed to idle/accelerate to 3000 RPM's smoothly in park.
What to do? I imagine I need a full set of O2's. Perhaps a tune up? Last one was at about at 90K and the I.coils are original. There are no other lights on the dash. I did have to pull the rear fuse to turn the radio off as several weeks ago it wouldn't turn off. Top light bar with time clock stayed on dim.
But nothing else stands out. However, it needs a new left drive shaft boot and the passenger door broke. These seem common. Don't know if I just need a new door carrier or the handle as well. It's a bimmer after all.

I had a misfire with fuel cutoff a couple of weeks ago. Turn out it was a bad coil. Autozone have them for $80.00 if you don't want to go to the stealers.

Random misfire could be a vacuum leak. Pull the DISA valve (two torx screws) and see if it slides off the intake manifold easily without any resistance. Now put it back on, do it slide back without any resistance? If you don't feel any resistance the seal between the DISA valve and the intake manifold is shot. You can spend $200 for a new DISA valve or $3.00 for an O-ring. Google BMW DISA VAlve O-ring.

it seems that a vac leak was a correct diagnosis... Also, if you removed the MAF when you did the work, check to see if the sensor is plugged in all the way and everything is connected/plugged right...

low octane gas - it is a long debate... the reason that BMW engines call for at least 91 octane rating is supposedly in the fact that the BMW engines are higher compression ratio engines that the majority on the market. In europe you can get even 98 octane (i even saw 76 octane fuel).
Higher the octane rating, less "flammable" the fuel is, as less flammable fuel will not SELF ignite upon higher pressure (laws of physics involved in self-ignition), which is present in higher compression engines... as a result, the engine will not knock... less octane fuel is generally cheaper and thus lacking the detergents that oil companies put in more expensive higher octane fuels - that is the only major difference justifying higher price... other than the knocking thing... you can use regular gas as an emergency measure as long as it is not a matter of habit...

try to stay in the octane over 91, just to be easy on the engine - the electronics can retard the kncking but there is only so much they can do...

see if these simple remedies offer any help and then move onto the more complicated, expensive solutions...

It seems a search of Disa valve brings up many interesting and complex facts about this all important part. Mine being original at 12yrs/173Kmiles means I should do a complete check up. As I did the CCV. Hopefully this is it and I don't have to replace 4 O2 sensors.
BTW, what the average cost per cylinder for NGK double plat 4 prong plug with rubber stem extension?

Price varies between where you buy them. You can search on line for the lowest price. Your saving may be gone due to shipping cost.

Good point. Checked the Disa today and Bingo, that's the issue. Glad I had it towed. Getting the rebuild kit at G.A.S at $70. can't do $300. This morning I unlocked the X5, then closed the door and locked/security set. Noticed the rear left/driver side tail light top was on. Opened the car, removed the bulb/socket unit. Locked/security the car. When the two truck arrived he noticed the bottom bulb/socket tail light left side was on. Removed it. 3 weeks ago the radio wouldn't turn off. Locked /security set and the top light bar/clock displayed stayed on. I removed the rear location radio fuse. Everything seem to work fine. No lights on the dash, except for SES in relationship to engine.
Is this a precursor to battery issues to come? Battery is 3 plus years old. Related to radio? What can I test and look for? Help. Please.

What was wrong with your DISA valve? If it just the seal, the seal can be replaced with an O-ring for about $3.00 on eBay. If the flap is broken or the pin that secure the flap is loose or has fallen out I would just spend the extra money and buy a new Disa Valve. The pin once it become loose can be sucked into the intake manifold and cause internal engine damage.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
I just replaced my O-ring for 5 bucks on the DISA and definitely is a bit smoother, the valve itself was in great shape still at 66k miles

GAS makes a nice product though and their rebuild kit will make the DISA bulletproof
