Navigation upgrade?

The dealer tells me my nav system needs to be replaced. Its really been acting up and as you know its not the most modern unit anyway. It will be replaced under 3rd party warranty using OEM parts for about $3k in parts alone. This after they replaced the $2k screen for me just a couple months back. Anyway, I may be able to settle with the warranty company on a less expensive aftermarket unit. I'd want full interoperability with the vehicle systems, controls, etc., OEM look and feel, and add bluetooth music streaming, aux inputs, etc.

I'm aware of the Dynavin unit and the need to install a MID in the glovebox for the OBC. Are there any other good/better options out there?

Thanks!

Houligan unit is the other option.

Why do they want to replace your unit?

For FULL intergration + what you're looking for dynavin is the way to go. with the newer units, you won't even need the MID( do a quick search on them, it is really beautiful how much the new units interact with the X) they are pricey though. You could go for an aftermarket nav and do the MID relocation to the trunk or glove box just ass good and can cost less overall. just have to make sure for what ever unit you buy there is a steering wheel control interface or adapter of some sort. Only challenge with aftermarket is the whole OEM look and feel, did see this one new unit, but i don't know if it will satisfy that department for you

hope this helps.

Our generation of BMWs have only one of the components below...and all functions of the OBC/Phone/Clock/Audio/DSP are controlled or accessed using it as the central command center:
  • MID (multi-informational display)
  • IRIS (independent radio intergrated system)
  • Nav monitor (GPS Nav screen/ TV screen)

Thanks for the help. I didnt realize the Dynavin units now integrate more with the OBC. I have a little bit of a dilemma as the dealer was not able to demonstrate to the warranty inpector the unit failing. I guess I'll have to catch it on video.

so, if the factory nav is swapped for a non-factory nav, there is no MID to relocate.

Yep. Unless one goes online to find a used one.
