CPT-8000 installation trouble
I have been a bimmer driver for years, and have succesfully installed two CPT-7000's and two 8000's in a variety of 3's, 5's, and 7-series over the past years. My wife drives a 2001 X5 3.0, and a friend drives a 2002 X5 3.0. I just moved up from an e38 to an e65 myself, and had the whole CPT-8000 system left over. I have the cradle, the microphone, the CPT-8000, the phone module, and the voice module. With good thoughts in mind, I endeavoured to install the kit in first my wife's, and second my friend's X5. Both of these X5's have the proper plugs in the left rear compartment to plug in the phone and voice modules. Once installed, the MID shows "PHONE INSTALLED?" if you press the phone button (I hadn't yet installed the cradle and phone). Yet, after removing the consoles of both vehicles, I could not find the connections for the cradle and antennae connectors. I specifically have the X5 cradle with the long connecting wires (much longer than that of the 5 or 7 series cradle). As well, neither car seems to have a microphone wire. Is it possible that both these vehicles have only half the necessary prewiring for the phone system? Or, are the connectors "hidden" somehow? Please help! You should find the connectors burried down under the carpet by the shifter mechanism. Keep digging, I'll bet you'll find them there!! The console has to be completely removed in order to get to them.
Regarding the mic cable, I found mine by partially pulling down the headliner and it was tie wrapped above the driver's side sun visor roughly in line with the steering wheel position from a left to right perspective. Mine is a 2001 3.0i as well.

One end of the connectors is under the armrest. You have to take off the bottom plate to get to it.
These cables go under the dash and if I remember correctly, they go along the handbrake and towards the driver's side. Remove the carpeted side panel on the driver's side just below the center console. This is where the cables and antenna connect to the main wiring harness... |

Thanks for the help. Although I thought I looked everywhere, I didn't pull the carpet up or look over the headliner over the driver's visor...
I'll reply again after I rip everthing apart again... |

Thanks UCrew
You were correct. The bloody mic cable was in the middle of the driver's visor, taped to the rest of the wiring. The cradle and antenna connectors were buried under the carpet under the hand brake. I never would have guessed these connections would have been so hidden - in my 2001 525i and my 1998 740iL they were not buried at all.
So, I spent a couple hours and got everything installed. The phone is recognized by the car, the address book loads, and the "in use" and "roam" lights function properly. It all seems perfect. Here's my next problem: I can't hear anything! I have the voice module installed, as well as the CPT-8000 computer module. I can dial from the stereo or the steering wheel, but can't hear anything. If I hold the "call/voice" button on the steering wheel, I see "PHONE" on the stereo display, but don't hear the expected beep. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks! |
