Since I have had the car for about 6 years, I remembered an incident a few years back when the same thing happened as I was making a u-turn. It only happened once about 4 1/2 years ago and that was it. Car came right back on after restarting and continued to work just fine. I have to say that the concept of the voltage regulator "freaking out" if voltage surpasses 14v or something sound very plausible. The alternator is working just fine right now - I tested it under very heavy load - AC/heater/HID's/etc - and it held up with the voltage pretty well. So, if I end up replacing the alternator, does the voltgage regular come with it? I know it can be bought as a separate unit but are they attached? Thanks again for everyone's help! |

For piece of mind, have the fault memory read out by a GT1 style computer. The transmission computer should store an overvoltage fault if what I said is what happened. If it is not an automatic, then another computer on the K-Bus should also store a fault such as the body module or instrument cluster.

Sounds good Killcrap. I have an OBD reader, I wonder if I can do it that way? I have scanned for codes already, which of course there weren't any.

Does anyone know what actually fixed this issue? I am having the exact same symptoms with my 3.0.

Do you have a light on the dash for SES or CEL? If you do, get it scan and post the results.

Girlfriend leaned forward in the passenger seat. Car died immediately. Started right back up and got us home. Woke up in the AM, cold day, completely dead. No locks no cluster no electricity. Pulled battery + in trunk for 20 min and replace. Car started. Airbag light on. Turned off. Tried to start again next AM, same dead. I live rural and it's tough to get to mechanic. Any suggestions would help. Replaced ignition switch. No fix. On forum found to be possible battery, alternator, or occupancy mat.

I have found out that the car can go completely dead when the battery loses its terminal (I have a post about it, but the issue was my fault). since you can pinpoint the issue to the "leaning forward" and then the airbag light coming on, I would suspect that something under the seat got shorted and killed some major electrical "artery" (I would hope that such an artery would have been fused!). With the airbag light on, I would suggest checking the wires around the airbag connectors (airbag related connectors are yellow throughout the car), the seat mat... The front seats can come off by unscrewing two bolts on the back and two nuts on the front, same size (don't remember the size though). Look for chaffed insulation on the wires, look for possible burn marks, smell.. The heated seats use some fat wires, as the heaters pull some juice, and if shorted, may wreak some havoc in electrical system.
Just give it a try, let us know what the results are... Good luck!
