Does anyone know if the diff cover is gonna be a pain to remove? Or is it a simple unbolt the cover and it will slide right out?

Given the low failure rate of these, why not get a diff from a junkyard?
Also, given the symptoms, I would want to take a close look at the intermediate driveshaft bearing, (in the middle of the rear driveshaft). Those DO have a high failure rate, and can cause similar symptoms. If there are any tears or cracks in the rubber ring, replace this before considering a diff. Take a look at the guibos as well.

How many miles on your X? There's also a U-joint on the drive shaft that if worn can cause vibrations....but isn't something that would generally wear until you start getting up there in mileage. Just a thought.

Just around 92,000 MILES. I was holding the two shafts and twisting them to show play in the U joint and there was obviously none. Judging by the shavings in the oil it is safe to say that the differential is at fault.
My model is a diesel and the diff is the same as in the 4.6is (i think). Will take 2-3 weeks to ship to my skybox and another week till I receive it in Trinidad. It's time to wait and purchase/fab up tools to remove the diff mounts and rear axle now. I cannot express my disgust at this diff. |
