New X5 owner here ....

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I just traded my E90 in on a X5. So far its great i have been wanting one ever since i drove a newer diesel X5. So i started looking for a older manual in a price range where i can own it outright and found;

2001 X5 5speed sport package Silver on Black leather 101k, one owner vehicle. with a few issues

1- leaky valve cover
2- i hope a bad battery ( eml light , brake , abs , traction control which go away if i turn the car off and restart or clean all other areas, maf, lcv, etc..)
3- dreaded pixels in stereo
4- OBC button doesn't work
5- passenger side lock, locks but doesnt unlock with key fob

any suggestions on fixes are welcome along with a few other questions i have

stereo shows telephone button and has the mic up in the overhead to the right of the door opener but when i press the button nothing happens??

any mods or upgrades i should do, Since the stereo bad whats the best upgrade option aftermarket or and original Nav unit ?

Since i moved backwards in some creature comforts from my E90 xi like the three blink blinkers for passing is there any thing else on these vehicles

also what are first maintenence items you guys recommend i do to ensure many more miles, I will do oil change , air filter ( plugs were just done ), brakes are new, tires new , i read something about cooling part upgrades,

Welcome. First mod should be spacers for the rear wheels. All your issues have been discussed to death. So do a site search, and you will get more info that any one of us can post. Unfortunately no 3 blink blinkers for our e53s. But lots of other coding options are possible.

Congratulation man.....
your #2 question...i have the same thing..turn off the car wait about 2-5mins ..start her back up..it goes away...found out..that it was battery.....2nd option can be alternator.....goodluck with your X....btw ..did you get the car at Parsippany?...non bmw dealer?...just curious

I'm gonna test the battery today. What are these other coding options ? And lastly I did not get it in parsippany but if a 5spd is right around the corner from my home I will be a lil upset

valve cover is easy i'm surprised it wasn't done when the plugs were done.

at your mileage, I would replace diffs and transfer case fluids, brake fluid flush if it hasnt been done, tranny fluid (you can read threads on whether you want to do this or just leave it "lifetime"), check your belts for wear and tensioners for noises, and I would check your expansion tank for cracks or leaks, and cooling hoses as well.

Pixels on stereo you can have fixed for about 150 or so, I'm about to get mine done on my speedo cluster, the battery/alternator thing you need to check voltage and maybe have your battery tested? if its original battery, I would replace just for peace of mind, you are looking at 12 years old battery lol.

does the passenger side open from the inside when you pull the handle on the inside and push out? if so, your door carrier is busted.

yes i can get in and out of the car on the passenger side the nub just doesnt come up so im pull the door apart but i have notice sometimes i have to put the key in the drivers side to unlock it first thing in the morning then it seems to be fine.

I searched for coding but did not come up with a list of most common coding options on what to change ( ill dig a lil deeper )

seems the intake tube was loose as i went to check the air filter the MAF the housing just popped off that would explain a possible P1500 code i got once

also are these trannys notchy in general? I'm sure i will do trans flush and refill or are these bushing that wear out on these trucks.

Sorry for all the questions i havent really gotten into it yet since its about 1 degree out but im gonna get it in a garage today and play with it.

any suggestions on the BC button? oh and its just theradio with pixels out

drove it in some snow last night and this thing is solid way nicer then my 325xi i had in snow
