Literally a split second of rattle was noticeable on a cold startup, but that was it. I haven't really noticed any difference since the work has been done either.

You are probably hearing the Vanos rattle a bit before the oil pressure rises. From what I understand, that is normal. At least "normal" for BMW.
Besides engine hours and mileage, I'm also wondering if colder climates would cause quicker failures. Or repeated cold starts... causing the guides' plastic to heat cycle and become weak.
Either way, there's no real way to predict the failure. Dang...
