OH OH 4x4 light is on

The yellow 4x4 indicator in the center just came on....the owners manual only says to have it checked as ASAP....
What does this mean, and can we drive the car ?

Are other lights on or just the 4x4? Are you getting the "trans fail safe" warning? Did you accidently push the DSC buttin on your X?

Check this out . . . it may help.

If you still have the original battery, replace it.

It worked, I did what the video suggested and the light went out.
The light had flashed on a few times previously, but went right out.
Could this be due to having changed the rear tires a few months ago, I have different mfg tires on the rear...same size.. ( X5 is 06/3.0 53,000 mi)

As other already mentioned...this light can mean several things based on if it comes on steady, blinks, or comes on with other warning lights:

If the light flashes or stays on continuously after pressing the button (intentionally or unintentionally):

If it comes on and stays continuously lit:

If it come on with other warning lights:

Like upallnight stated, your battery may need replacing but it could also mean the voltage regulator and/or alternator could be failing as well. Search this forum and you'll see this is a common problem. I know I have posted my share on this subject. I replaced the alternator (came with the regulator as well) on my X a few months back after this problem and all good now.

Good luck
